SAFETY AND QUALITY.

October is Hearing Awareness Month

Our annual hearing health tests are here and it's not only mandatory but vital for associates to attend these sessions to detect potential hearing impairments early. As a part of our safety initiative, wearing hearing protection consistently is essential both for personal wellbeing and to avoid recordable injuries as loss of hearing can impact our quarterly incentive.

There will be a testing mobile in the parking lot on the following dates/times:

  • October 30th: 6AM to 6PM

  • October 31st: 6 AM to 2 PM and 6 PM to 12 AM

  • November 1st: 6 AM to 2 PM and 6 PM to 12 AM

  • November 2nd: 6 AM to 2 PM

  • November 3rd: 6 AM to 10 AM

Prioritizing ear protection today can safeguard our hearing for tomorrow. Together, let's ensure a safe and sound work environment!

Year-Over-Year Reduction in Claims

Over the past three years, we've achieved a remarkable reduction in the number and value of claims, highlighting our dedication to consistent quality improvement:

  • 2021: $822,946 in claims ($0.017/lb)

As we gear up for the final phase of the year, let our focus be on reinforcing training, embracing innovative solutions, and further streamlining our operations to ensure the quality of our product remains unmatched.

QUALITY UPDATE.

“As we close in on the final weeks of the largest expansion project in Universal Fibers history, I want to recognize the group of folks who helped make it happen with long hours and incredible teamwork. This project began to take seed in 2021 with work officially beginning in the spring of 2022. The core project team consists of construction, electronics, engineering, and design/draft. This group has worked diligently over the past 18 months and continues to in order to complete 3 new one-step lines, a compressor building expansion, a new automated packing line and a new chiller. Whether it be sitting in a meeting room, working with contractors or being in the heart of the install, each individual on the project team had an integral part in the overall success of completing this unprecedented project on budget and in a timely manner. Another team that had a great impact on the success of getting the new 1-step lines running is our Process Technicians. They worked long hours and had to learn on the fly as commissioning of the lines took place. They continue to work to optimize speeds on the 3 new one-step lines. A special thank you to the upstream maintenance team for being quick to respond to calls and repairing issues with urgency as the growing pains of new lines were/are present daily. Thank you to the upstairs and downstairs operators and to the countless others who felt the impact of construction and who were willing to adjust their schedules, workflow and productivity to get us where we are today, Thank you! This expansion project has set us up for a very bright future here at Universal Fibers. It will not only help us keep up with the ever-changing fiber market but allows us to diversify where needed to be successful for years to come.”

In every community, there are unsung heroes who live amongst us, doing remarkable things every day that touch the lives of those around them. Bob Cann is one of those extraordinary individuals whose story is a testament to the power of love and kindness. Bob and his wife began their journey much like any other couple. They had three children of their own, a loving home, and dreams for the future. But destiny had something even bigger in store for them.

Fostering is not for the faint-hearted. It is a calling that asks you to open your doors, your home, and most importantly, your heart to children who have often faced unspeakable hardships. And in answering this call, Bob and his family have been a beacon of hope to 16 foster children over the years.

For many, fostering might feel like a temporary arrangement. But for those who have experienced it, they understand that the house doesn't remain just a house. It transforms. It becomes a sanctuary filled with echoes of laughter, tears, and countless memories. One of the lesser-known aspects of the fostering system is the emotional baggage that these children often carry. Some have witnessed traumas that most adults can't even fathom. From bad habits to deeply ingrained fears, every child's story is unique. It falls upon the foster family to help them unlearn the survival instincts they've adopted and teach them that they are finally in a safe space.

But the journey is not without its challenges. Bob recalls the heartbreak that came with loving a child, only to see them returned to an environment that didn't promise the same care and stability. Such separations, while difficult, were lessons in resilience. However, amidst the ups and downs, there was light. Out of the 16 children they fostered, Bob and his wife adopted five, giving them a forever home and the promise of undying love. Today, the Cann household is a beautiful mosaic of souls, each with their own story, yet intricately linked by love. It's a testament to the idea that families aren't just made by blood but by bonds that are even stronger.

For Bob and his family, the journey has been long and, at times, arduous–but they wouldn't have it any other way. For in every challenge, they found strength. In every tear, they found joy. And in every child, they found a piece of their heart. To the outside world, Bob might be just another individual. But to the children whose lives he has touched, he is a hero, a pillar of strength, and above all, a beacon of unwavering love. May his story inspire us all to look beyond ourselves, to embrace the world with an open heart, and to remember that every act of kindness, no matter how small, has the power to change the world.

Universal Fibers had the honor of being a part of the United Way of Southwest Virginia Careers Expo for Youth this year where we got to share our process with over 4,000 kids in our region.
